Before you can pass the UK driving test, you have to pass the theory test, which consists of two parts, the multiple choice section and the hazard perception test. The current fee to take the test is £25.00 which covers the cost of the Hazard test. You are asked 50 multiple choice questions. The pass mark is 43 or more and the time allowed to complete the test is 57 minutes. See the video on the right for an example of what to expect on the new Hazard Perception CGI test.

The hazard perception test is the second part of the driving theory test and is taken a few minutes after completing the multiple choice questions. For the hazard perception test the questions are made up of 14 video clips, the pass mark is 44 out of a possible 75. More info in the video above.

Books

Below and left I have listed a few of the most popular books on the market, which are very helpful and informative, all are laid out in an easy to read format, usually combining words and diagrams on each page to make learning and remembering easier.

The Official Highway Code 2007 Edition

Essential reading for all road-users in England, Scotland and Wales. This updated edition of the only official Highway Code contains the very latest rules of the road. Many of these rules are legal requirements and must be adhered to in order to avoid penalty - fines, penalty points, disqualification or even prison. All road users need to be aware of the new rules. The rules also include a reference to the legislation that creates the offence. The Official Highway Code reflects the most up-to-date legislation that road-users must adhere to, advice on road safety, and best practice.

The Official DSA Guide to Driving - The Essential Skills

This new edition, in a new format for 2007, is the only official industry-standard driving manual from DSA, the Driving Standards Agency. There is no other comparable, comprehensive, official product available on the market. It is ideal for anyone learning to drive, as it will help you pass not only the theory test, but the practical test also. If you're considering buying a book on learning to drive, to supplement your lessons, this is definately the one to buy!

The Official Guide to Learning to Drive

The only official guide which explains the standards required to pass today's practical driving test. Most people fail their driving test because they are not prepared. This book will help the learner and the person that pays for driving lessons by explaining the standard required for each key skill examined within the driving test. The aim is to make sure that the learner is capable of driving safely and confidently, without prompting from an instructor before they take their test.
